Week of September 27th--Gothic Literature!

With your blog group, develop 2 level two questions that reflect your reading of Hawthorne's "The Minister's Black Veil"; you must also respond thoughtfully to these 2 level two questions! Remember, you should post these 2 level two questions, then respond to them. You are expected to refine and inform your blog at least three times throughout the week.

  8. 1. By their very nature, humans are very judgmental creatures, never looking into themselves and observing their own faults, instead focusing on the faults of others and judging every aspect they know of their lives. This can be clearly seen when the sexton states, “I can’t really feel as if good Mr. Hooper’s face was behind that piece of crape,” (Hawthorne 5). The sexton of the church himself is judging Mr. Hooper just on the basis of wearing a piece of cloth over his face. In addition, when an old woman says, “I don’t like it, he has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding is face,” (Hawthorne 6), and when Goodman Gray cried, “Our parson has gone mad!”(Hawthorne 6), they are showing in one of the truest forms humanities need to judge other people. They state that he has changed himself into something awful and has gone mad, just from him wearing something over his face. For it is only because of this black veil that, “in this manner Mr. Hooper spent a long life, irreproachable in outward act, yet shrouded in dismal suspicions; kind and loving, though unloved, and dimly feared; a man apart from men, shunned in their health and joy,” (Hawthorne 13). It was the almost groundless judgments of other that led to Mr. Hooper’s life of loneliness, if this simple black veil does not bring to light the fact that humans are very judgmental, nothing will forevermore.
    2. The Black veil frightened everyone so much because it was a physical representations of their own metaphorical veils.

    2. Every person has their own metaphorical veils which they use to hide their inner selves, their secret sins, and the true meaning behind their acts. The Black veil frightened everyone so much because it was a physical representation of their own metaphorical veils. By wearing this black veil, it appeared to the parishioners that Mr. Hooper could see through their veils that they were using to hide their deceit secret sins from others. It frightened the parishioners, that in their minds, Mr. Hooper could see through their lies. Their fear of Mr. Hooper seeing their veils is revealed when he says in his very last minutes of life, “I look around me, and, lo! On every visage a Black Veil!” (Hawthorne 15). It was that Mr. Hooper appeared to see through their own metaphorical veils with his own physical veil, that terrified the parishioners so much, nothing more.

  11. 1. WHAT DOES THE BLACK VEIL PROVE ABOUT HUMANS BEING JUDGMENTAL?
The black veil proves that humans are judgemental because when they see Mr.Hooper, they automatically become self conscious. Humans become self conscious because of pride, and insecurity which induces lack of common respect among others, and rationale thinking. Even an old lady who attended the church that Mr.Hooper preaches in said this: "I don't like it," muttered an old woman, as she hobbled into the meeting-house. "He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face." This proves that she never took the time to see the example he was setting to his church, but instead she took it as a direct insult and said he changed himself into "something awful".

    2. WHY DID THE BLACK VEIL SCARE EVERYONE SO MUCH?
The Black Veil scared everyone so much because it symbolized secret sin. This could represent the secret sin that all men carry have, or it could be Mr. Hooper's sin. It could also represent the fact that he could have had an affair with the girl that died in the beginning. "and that a crime of dark dye, (which could have been the young girl) has been committed." It was also said that two attendees at the funeral saw him walking hand in hand with the spirit of the girl which could represent him being the gateway between the spirit world and earth.

It could be also be the fact that humans are very selective in groups and they judge automatically on anyone who is different because they aren't accustomed to it.

This relates back to the original question because the people attending in Mr.Hooper's congregation believe that he's something more than a human simply because he has a black veil on all on the time.

  15. 1.) The black veils shows everyone(humans) are quick to judge before actually understanding why something is done. In the text it says that they hung about the town center whispering about it and children covered their faces with a black sheet not fully understanding why it was done.
2.)The black veil scared everyone so much because they were not expecting it. The came to the conclusion that he had some hidden secret that was unknown. The congregation felt as if their sins were know and were afraid to be judged or to admit to them .
